Remembering Miss Liberty: Funeral for Sondra Fortunato to be Held Friday

Toms River, NJ – Sondra M. Fortunato, affectionately known to many as Miss Liberty, passed away on January 11, 2024, at Community Medical Center in Toms River at the age of 75. Born in Irvington, NJ, to Charles and Lillian Fortunato, Sondra carved a niche for herself as a freelance model, embodying the spirit of liberty and freedom in her unique style.

Throughout her life, Sondra was a vibrant presence in Toms River and beyond, known for her flamboyant appearances at local events, parades, and gatherings where she often adorned herself in elaborate costumes, earning her the title of Miss Liberty. Her dedication to spreading joy and patriotism was unmatched, as she became a local icon celebrated for her generosity and spirit.

Sondra’s legacy is marked by her boundless energy and the love she had for her community. Her participation in events like the annual Halloween parade, even in her last weeks, underscored her commitment to bringing happiness to those around her. Carl Weingroff, a parade organizer, remembered her as “not just Miss Liberty, but Miss Everything,” highlighting her multifaceted contributions to the community’s spirit and morale​​.


In addition to her public persona, Sondra was a woman of deep compassion, often engaging in charitable activities and touching the lives of many with her kindness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in her honor on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 11:30 AM at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 685 Hooper Avenue, Toms River, New Jersey, with interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Toms River. Her passing marks the end of an era in Toms River, but her legacy as Miss Liberty will continue to live on in the memories of those she inspired.
