Washington, D.C. – Dallas McKinney, 19, faces serious charges following his arraignment on a grand jury indictment for a spree of armed carjackings in Southeast DC. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith announced the charges stemming from the incidents that occurred within a 35-minute window.
The indictment presents McKinney with 11 counts, including three counts of armed carjacking, four counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle during a crime of violence, and carrying a pistol without a license. Judge Jason Park has ordered McKinney to be held without bond as he awaits trial.
The series of crimes began on September 29, when McKinney, at gunpoint, carjacked an Uber driver in the Eastern Market neighborhood, threatening both the driver and a passenger. Approximately 20 minutes later, he and an accomplice attempted another armed carjacking near Branch and Pennsylvania Avenues SE, followed by a successful carjacking 15 minutes later at the intersection of Alabama and Massachusetts Avenues SE.
McKinney’s arrest occurred that afternoon in the 1300 block of Congress Street SE, close to the locations of the stolen vehicles. Upon arrest, he was found in possession of a tan Glock 19X 9mm pistol, which was loaded with an extended magazine and modified with an illegal “giggle switch” to convert it to automatic fire.
