Trenton, NJ – Legislation aimed at increasing caller ID transparency for telemarketing calls has been approved by the New Jersey Senate. The bill, sponsored by Senators James Beach and Nellie Pou, mandates that telemarketers transmit either their name or the name of the entity they are calling on behalf of to caller identification services.

Senator James Beach, representing Burlington and Camden counties, emphasized the importance of this legislation for consumer empowerment. He noted that it addresses the issue of telemarketers concealing their identity, allowing consumers to make informed decisions about which calls to answer.

Adding to the legislative efforts to safeguard consumer rights, the bill, known as S-1237, builds on previous measures like the “Seinfeld Bill.” Senator Nellie Pou, Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and representing Bergen and Passaic counties, stressed the reasonable expectation of knowing the caller’s identity before answering, which this bill seeks to fulfill.

The passage of this bill by a unanimous vote marks a significant step toward enhancing consumer protection against the often intrusive tactics of telemarketers, ensuring that residents have more control over their phone interactions.
