A New York man, Christopher Douglas Finney, 32, of Hopewell Junction, has been arrested and faces multiple charges related to his involvement in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol insurrection. Finney, who recorded himself celebrating entry into the Capitol with exclamations of success, was identified through his screen name “Chris Patriot” found on the cellphone of another rioter already facing charges.

The charges against Finney include obstruction of an official proceeding and civil disorder, alongside several misdemeanor offenses. These misdemeanors comprise unauthorized entry into restricted areas, disorderly conduct in and around the Capitol, engaging in acts of physical violence, and demonstrating within the Capitol building.

Court documents reveal Finney traveled to Washington, D.C., to attend the “Stop the Steal” rally, which culminated in the riotous disruption of a Congressional session meant to certify the 2020 presidential election results. His apprehension followed an FBI investigation that traced communications in a militia chat group to Finney’s phone.

Additionally, purchases made by Finney prior to the riots, allegedly using his then-girlfriend’s credit card, have been detailed. These items, acquired from a Home Depot in New York, included tactical and restraining equipment such as a lightweight plate carrier vest, anti-fog goggles, and zip ties, hinting at premeditation for the events that unfolded at the Capitol.
