Ocean City Police Department Ramps Up DUI Enforcement Efforts

Ocean City, MD – The Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) has intensified its efforts to combat impaired driving through two DUI Saturation operations, with the support of the Maryland Highway Safety Office’s Zero Deaths Maryland initiative.

The enforcement waves, conducted over the weekends of February 2-4 and February 9-11, 2024, coinciding with Super Bowl festivities, aimed to curb DUI offenses through heightened patrol activities. The OCPD’s saturation patrols resulted in significant outcomes, including the deployment of eight patrol officers who dedicated a total of 42 hours to DUI-specific enforcement under a grant-funded initiative.

The focused enforcement efforts led to the arrest of six drivers impaired by alcohol, one additional driver impaired by both alcohol and drugs, and the handling of two DUI-related crash investigations. Officers initiated 41 traffic stops for various infractions, resulting in 47 traffic citations and three criminal arrests during the overtime operation periods.

A notable incident from the saturation details revealed a driver with a breath alcohol content (BrAC) of 0.27, significantly above the legal limit, highlighting the dangers of impaired driving. The operations also saw collaboration with neighboring jurisdictions, including the Msp Berlin and the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, underscoring the community-wide commitment to road safety.

The OCPD has announced plans for subsequent DUI enforcement waves in March 2024, reaffirming its dedication to ensuring safer roads for Ocean City residents and visitors alike. The department continues to urge the public to seek alternative transportation options after consuming alcohol, drugs, or certain prescription medications.
