The Delaware State Police have arrested 35-year-old Chad Johnson of Newark, Delaware, on charges related to gun possession and traffic violations following a motorcycle crash investigation last week in Newark.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of February 8, 2024, when a state trooper observed Johnson committing a traffic violation on Kirkwood Highway near Harmony Road. Attempting to circumvent a roadblock, Johnson made a U-turn and then fled at a high rate of speed when the trooper attempted a traffic stop. After a brief pursuit, which was discontinued by the trooper for safety reasons, Johnson crashed his motorcycle while failing to navigate a curve.
Upon responding to the crash site, the trooper discovered a loaded handgun in Johnson’s pocket during a search. Further investigation revealed that Johnson, a convicted felon, is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Following his arrest and subsequent medical treatment for injuries sustained in the crash, Johnson was processed at Troop 2. He faced arraignment at Justice of the Peace Court 11 and was released on a $15,000 secured bond.
