Washington, DC – Andre Smith, 27, and Malachi McFarland, 24, both residents of Washington, D.C., have been sentenced to 18 and 14 years in prison, respectively, for the murder of Kerry Odoms in April 2021.
The sentencing was carried out by the Honorable Robert Okun in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, as announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith.
On October 30, 2023, Smith and McFarland each pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder while armed. The fatal incident took place on the evening of April 15, 2021, when Kerry Odoms, 29, also of Washington, D.C., was in the company of McFarland and others in a parking lot located at 3319 10th Place SE, in the Congress Heights area.
The government’s evidence revealed that Smith approached the group and, at 9:54 p.m., abruptly attacked Odoms, firing multiple gunshots at him. McFarland, after momentarily distancing himself during the initial gunfire, returned to the scene to fire a second volley of shots directly at Odoms. The combined gunfire from Smith and McFarland resulted in Odoms sustaining eight gunshot wounds, ultimately leading to his death.
