New York, New York – Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban has posthumously promoted School Crossing Guard Krystyna Naprawa to Community Coordinator during a ceremony at One Police Plaza. Naprawa, who served for 13 years, tragically lost her life on October 20, 2023, after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Woodhaven Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue in Queens, shortly after she had safely guided pedestrians and children across the street.
In tribute to Naprawa’s dedication, the NYPD has also announced a series of initiatives aimed at improving the safety of the department’s more than 2,200 school crossing guards. These measures include enhanced training provided by the Traffic Enforcement Training Unit, the issuance of new safety equipment such as reflective vests, whistles, and “stop” paddles, and the introduction of annual refresher courses. Additionally, significant changes will be made to the intersection where Naprawa was killed, ensuring it is no longer managed by a single guard.
Police Commissioner Caban praised Naprawa for her commitment to safeguarding New York’s children and her role in fostering a safer community. Henry Garrido, Executive Director of District Council 37, expressed gratitude for the posthumous recognition and the NYPD’s commitment to the safety of School Crossing Guards. This move is seen as a lasting tribute to Naprawa’s impact on her colleagues and the broader community.
