Deputy Saves Animals from Fire at Reptile Rescue in South Park

South Park, PA – Deputy Steve Costello of the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office is being commended for his prompt actions that saved several animals’ lives during a fire. Costello was patrolling near the intersection of Brownsville and McCorkle Roads just before 4:00 PM today when he spotted a building ablaze, which was identified as Nate’s Reptile Rescue.

Upon noticing the fire, Deputy Costello immediately reported the situation to the Allegheny County Dispatch. This quick response led to the dispatch of multiple fire companies to the scene, including units from South Park, Broughton, and Pleasant Hills. Firefighters managed to rescue various animals from the fire, including turtles and at least one alligator, showcasing the critical role of first responders in animal rescue operations.


The fire companies remained at the scene to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to prevent any further damage or injuries. The efforts of Deputy Costello and the responding firefighters highlight the importance of vigilance and quick action in emergency situations, saving the lives of several animals housed at Nate’s Reptile Rescue.
