SECAUCUS, NEW JERSEY — A high-speed chase culminating in a dramatic river escape attempt ended in the arrest of Gregory Calvo, 53, of Union City, on February 23, 2024. The Secaucus Police Department, assisted by multiple law enforcement agencies, apprehended Calvo after he attempted to evade capture by jumping into Berry’s Creek.

The incident began when Loss Prevention at Kohl’s reported a theft by Calvo, who then fled in a stolen 2011 gray Mitsubishi Lancer. Despite efforts to evade police, including driving recklessly and ignoring police signals to stop, Calvo crashed near MetLife Stadium, abandoned the vehicle, and attempted to escape by jumping into the frigid waters of Berry’s Creek.

Utilizing an unmanned aerial drone, Secaucus Police maintained visual contact with Calvo until he was rescued from the water by officers and New Jersey State Troopers. He was subsequently taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment.

Recovered from the stolen vehicle were additional stolen property and burglar’s tools. Calvo faces multiple charges, including Obstructing the Administration of Law, Resisting Arrest, Shoplifting, Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Eluding, and Possession of Burglar Tools. He has been lodged in the Hudson County Jail, with the charges against him pending a court hearing.

Chief Dennis Miller commended the collaborative effort of local and state law enforcement agencies in apprehending the suspect, highlighting the commitment of the Secaucus Police Department to ensuring public safety and apprehending criminals.
