The Mercer Oak on Princeton Battlefield from the American Revolutionary War. A large white oak tree once stood on the spot. It was said that Hugh Mercer a Brigadier General in the Continental army took shelter under the tree after being mortally wounded, refusing to give ground to the British on January 3, 1777. The tree was about 300 years old when it was destroyed in a storm in 2000. The tree standing in the spot now grew from an acorn from the original.

TRENTON, NJ — A significant step was taken today as the Senate Environment and Energy Committee endorsed a concurrent resolution to establish a visitor’s center at Princeton Battlefield State Park. The resolution, introduced by Senator Andrew Zwicker, aims to enhance the preservation and educational potential of this historic site.

Senator Zwicker highlighted the importance of Princeton Battlefield in American Revolutionary history, marking the location of a crucial victory for George Washington and his troops. With the approach of the semiquincentennial anniversary of the American Revolution, Zwicker sees an ideal opportunity to create a state-of-the-art facility that would serve both as a tribute to this pivotal moment and an educational resource for visitors.

Princeton Battlefield State Park, under the stewardship of the Princeton Battlefield Society, already offers tours and educational materials. It features a museum within the historic William Clark home, a memorial Colonnade, and several informational markers. The proposed visitor’s center would significantly expand these offerings, providing a comprehensive experience for those looking to learn more about the battle and its significance.

The resolution, SCR-58, received unanimous support in the committee vote, moving it closer to realization.
