Arrest Made in Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident in Lower Manhattan

NEW YORK, NY – In the early hours of Wednesday, police were dispatched to Canal Street and Lafayette Street after receiving reports of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. Upon arrival, authorities discovered an unconscious man in his 30s with severe injuries. The victim was rushed to NYC Health & Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead.

The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was hit by a dark-colored SUV while crossing Canal Street mid-block. The impact caused significant head trauma, and the SUV fled the scene. The driver did not stay to render aid or provide information.

Two days following the incident, on Friday, Kevin Wright, a 48-year-old from Brooklyn, was arrested. Wright faces charges related to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and operating a motor vehicle without a license. The investigation continues as the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad seeks further details. The identity of the deceased remains unknown.
