Maryland Man Arrested for Assaulting Law Enforcement During U.S. Capitol Breach

A Maryland resident, Nicholas Ortt, 43, from Mount Airy, has been apprehended on charges related to the January 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. This incident interrupted a joint Congressional session to certify the 2020 presidential election results. Ortt faces felony charges including civil disorder and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers, alongside several misdemeanors.

Ortt was arrested in Ellicott City, Maryland, and is set to make his initial court appearance in the District of Columbia. Allegations suggest that after attending the “Stop the Steal” rally, Ortt headed to the Capitol, where he attempted to break through police lines. According to court documents, footage shows Ortt engaging in violent actions against law enforcement, including assaulting officers and attempting to grab their batons.

This arrest is part of the ongoing investigations and legal actions following the events that unfolded at the Capitol, highlighting the extensive efforts by law enforcement to hold individuals accountable for their roles in disrupting the democratic process.
