What’s That Smell? Controlled Burn Scheduled for Prince Frederick Area

Charlie Dwyer

PRINCE FREDERICK, MD — The Calvert County Department of Parks & Recreation, in collaboration with the Maryland Forest Service, announces plans to conduct controlled burns in several local parks. The burns are aimed at rejuvenating meadow vegetation and are scheduled to take place, weather permitting, at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, Gatewood Preserve, Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm, and Kings Landing Park.

The controlled burns on Grays Road, encompassing Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, Gatewood Preserve, and Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm, are set for Tuesday, March 12. These parks will be closed to the public during the operation, and residents may notice smoke in the vicinity. Emergency personnel will be present to ensure the burns are conducted safely.

The schedule for the burn at Kings Landing Park in Huntingtown will be announced later, with plans subject to change depending on weather conditions. Controlled burns are essential for the management of park ecosystems, helping to reduce thatch buildup, control invasive species, and promote the growth of native plants.
