New Jersey Lawmaker Wants to Force School Districts to Recognize Veterans Day as Mandatory Holiday

Erica Schmidt

TRENTON, NJ – Assemblywoman Aura K. Dunn of District 25 (Morris and Passaic) has introduced a bill mandating the closure of all New Jersey school districts on November 11th to observe Veterans Day. This legislative move aims to instill a greater sense of honor and recognition for veterans among students by marking Veterans Day as a mandatory school holiday.

Currently, New Jersey school boards have the autonomy to set their academic calendars, without any obligation to close schools on specific holidays. The proposed bill seeks to amend this, ensuring that schools remain closed on Veterans Day to pay homage to veterans who have served the country.

The bill is set to take effect immediately upon enactment and will apply from the first full school year thereafter. Assemblywoman Dunn emphasizes that the measure is designed to teach New Jersey’s youth to respect and honor the sacrifices made by veterans, acknowledging their bravery and service to the nation.
