New Jersey Police Warn of Investment Scam

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ – In early February, a Monroe Township resident fell victim to a scam falsely claiming to be from the Federal Trade Commission. The victim was tricked into believing their life savings were at risk and was instructed to package and hand over the money, which amounted to over $50,000, for protection.

The Monroe Township Police Department launched a comprehensive investigation following the incident. Through the use of Flock Safety license plate reader camera systems, authorities were able to identify and arrest four individuals connected to the scam, charging them with theft and conspiracy to commit theft. A portion of the stolen money was successfully recovered.

Chief Griffin Banos expressed concern over the scam, emphasizing the risk posed by in-person exchanges and urging residents to stay alert. The department offers seminars on fraud protection, with more information available at monroetwppolice.org.
