New Task Force Launched to Combat “Ghost Cars” in New York City

NEW YORK, NY – Janno Lieber, Chair and CEO of the Transportation Authority, announced the creation of a city-state task force aimed at eliminating “ghost cars” from the streets of New York City. These vehicles, difficult to track due to manipulated or counterfeit license plates, pose a significant challenge for traffic enforcement and toll collection systems.

In a recent operation that marked a significant achievement for the initiative, a collaboration involving multiple agencies, including the NYPD, the New York City Sheriff’s Office, and the Port Authority, led to the impoundment of 73 vehicles. This action underscores the government’s commitment to public safety and the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation.

The Governor of New York and the Mayor of New York City have declared an end to past discord, opting instead for a united front against crime. This partnership has already shown promising results in various areas of public safety, such as combating subway crimes, tackling vehicle theft, and removing illegal firearms from the community.

The strategy employs a comprehensive approach, combining state, local, and federal resources to share intelligence and operational capabilities. This methodology has been effective in addressing organized retail theft and illegal firearms possession, aiming for safer urban environments across the state. The task force is a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing complex urban challenges.
