CUMBERLAND, MD – A disturbing case of animal cruelty in Allegany County has led to the arrest of two individuals. The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrests following a detailed investigation into horrific findings on a local property.

The investigation commenced on March 12th after Allegany County Animal Control forwarded a complaint to the sheriff’s office, accompanied by graphic photographs of what seemed to be burned remains of dogs.

This prompted a thorough investigation, leading to the execution of a search warrant on March 15th in the 13000 block of Tulip Street. During the search, investigators discovered seven charred remains of different dog breeds in a burn pile and numerous other skeletal remains scattered across the property.

A K9 unit from the Office of the State Fire Marshal detected the presence of accelerants, suggesting the fires were intentionally set.

The recovered remains have been entrusted to the Humane Society of the United States for further examination to determine the exact cause of death. The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office was supported in its efforts by multiple agencies, including the Maryland State Police, C3I, the Office of the State Fire Marshal, and the Office of the State’s Attorney for Allegany County.

The individuals charged in connection with this case are Paul Thomas Baylor III, 19, facing four counts of animal cruelty, and Justin Uzonna Anabaraonye, 18, who is charged with six counts of animal cruelty and one count of aggravated animal cruelty. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are anticipated.
