ELLICOTT CITY, MD – An elderly couple from Ellicott City who fell victim to a roofing scam in 2021, losing $33,000 for work that was never completed, received unexpected help from the Howard County Police Department (HCPD).

The patrol squad responsible for their neighborhood, with support from a local roofing expert and donated materials from The Home Depot, stepped in to complete the roof at no cost to the homeowners.

But the department’s efforts didn’t end with the repair work. Through diligent investigation, HCPD officers charged William Nicholson, 33, from Pennsylvania, in connection with the scam. Earlier this week, Nicholson pleaded guilty to theft ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 from a vulnerable adult. He was sentenced to five years in jail, with all but six months suspended.

This case highlights the exceptional commitment of the HCPD officers and the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office in not only bringing justice for the victims but also in going above and beyond to rectify the situation directly.
