Virginia Beach Police to Offer Free Catalytic Converter Engraving to Deter Theft

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – In an effort to curb the rising theft of catalytic converters, the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) is inviting the community to a free Catalytic Converter Engraving event on April 6, 2024. This initiative, aimed at making it more difficult for thieves to sell stolen catalytic converters, will take place at the Third Precinct located at 926 Independence Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants are required to reserve an appointment for the event through a designated link. Police Chief Paul Neudigate expressed enthusiasm about the event, highlighting it as a vital step toward reducing vehicle-related thefts in the area. The VBPD, in collaboration with the Virginia State Police and the Help Eliminate Auto Theft (HEAT) program, will offer engraving services that include marking the vehicle identification number (VIN) on catalytic converters and windows. Each engraving session is expected to last about 15 minutes.

Catalytic converters are frequently stolen for their precious metals. By engraving the VIN, it becomes more challenging for thieves to sell these parts to auto recyclers. The VBPD also suggests other theft-prevention measures, such as parking in secure, well-lit areas, using security cameras, or installing aftermarket devices designed to protect exhaust systems. This event represents a proactive approach to safeguarding the community’s vehicles.
