Lake Arbor Man Arrested for Gold Bar Scam Targeting Elderly Victims

Wenhui Sun, 34, of Lake Arbor, California, has been arrested for allegedly perpetrating a government-imposter related gold bar scam, specifically targeting elderly individuals.

The scheme, which unfolded in early March 2024, involved Sun posing as a representative from the Office of the Inspector General – Federal Trade Commission. Victims were deceived into believing they were involved in a federal investigation regarding identity theft, drugs, and money laundering. Sun instructed the victims to transfer their assets into gold bars for safekeeping by an “FBI Agent.”

One victim complied with Sun’s demands, delivering two separate shipments of gold bars worth over $789,000 to the couriers.


Following an investigation, Sun was identified as the courier of the second gold bar delivery. On Monday, March 18, 2024, he was apprehended by the Montgomery County Department of Police- Financial Crimes Unit in Montgomery County.

Sun is currently held without bond at the Central Processing Unit and faces charges related to the scam. Additionally, a plane ticket to California, dated for the day of his arrest, was discovered among his belongings.
