Key Bridge Collapse Forces Alternate Routes for Trucks Carrying Hazardous Materials

Local News Report

BALTIMORE, MD – The Maryland Highway Transportation Department announces urgent traffic reroutes following the collapse of the I-695 Key Bridge due to a ship strike.

Authorities have shut down significant sections of I-695, with the Outer Loop closed at MD 10 (exit 2) and the Inner Loop at MD 157/Peninsula Expressway (exit 43). Motorists are advised to avoid the southeast corridor of I-695 and opt for alternate harbor crossings through the I-95 or I-895 tunnels.

Specific restrictions apply to vehicles transporting hazardous materials, including those carrying more than 10 pounds of bottled propane gas per container or those with bulk gasoline, explosives, and substantial quantities of radioactive materials. These vehicles should navigate around the tunnels using the western section of I-695.

Additionally, the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel bans vehicles over 13’-6” in height or 96” (8 feet) in width, whereas the I-95 Ft. McHenry Tunnel has restrictions of a 14’-6” height limit and an 11’-0” width limit.
