Maryland Adjusts Detour Pattern Around Collapsed Key Bridge

Local News Report

BALTIMORE, MD — Following the collapse of the Interstate 695 bridge over the Patapsco River, known as the Francis Scott Key Bridge, significant traffic reroutes and extended commuting times are in effect indefinitely. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is currently supporting the Maryland Transportation Authority in managing traffic disruptions.

As of March 26, 2024, modifications have been made to the closure of the outer loop of I-695, now extending to exit 1/Quarantine Road, beyond the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. This adjustment aims to improve access for local traffic around the affected area.

The inner loop of I-695 is closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway), including the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop, compelling drivers to seek alternative north/south routes. Motorists are advised to use either I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to circumvent the closure. However, commercial vehicles and recreation vehicles carrying prohibited materials for the tunnel, such as propane, are instructed to navigate the longer route around the Baltimore Beltway between Essex and Glen Burnie, which is expected to significantly increase travel times.

For ongoing updates and real-time information on this situation and all state highways, drivers can visit the Maryland Transportation Authority and MDOT SHA websites.
