SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY – Jayvon Bell, a 21-year-old Amityville resident, has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison after admitting to the attempted murder of a Suffolk County Police Officer and other charges. The sentencing follows his February guilty plea for the June 2023 shooting incident.
District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney highlighted the constant danger police officers face, praising the bravery of the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) in handling this case. Bell’s criminal activities began on May 10, 2023, with the armed robbery of a taxi driver in North Amityville, stealing about $150. A confrontation at a Lindenhurst Bolla Market occurred in June, where Bell threatened an employee with what seemed to be a handgun.
On June 21, 2023, Bell fired at police officers during a foot chase in East Farmingdale, with the encounter ending in his arrest and hospitalization for injuries from return fire. The recovery of the weapon and video evidence played a crucial role in his prosecution. Bell pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted first-degree robbery, and second-degree menacing before Acting Supreme Court Justice Anthony S. Senft, Jr.
