TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey is currently facing a significant challenge with unemployment, witnessing a notable increase in claims. Last week’s figures were 11.39% higher than the preceding week and 20.70% higher than the same period last year, as per WalletHub’s latest rankings in their States Where Unemployment Claims Are Increasing the Most study.
The state ranks second overall in the nation for its unemployment rates, a position indicative of its current economic struggles. In terms of week-over-week increases, New Jersey sits at the 10th position. When comparing the increase in unemployment claims to the same week last year, the state is ranked 12th.
Moreover, New Jersey is ranked second for the cumulative number of unemployment claims in 2024 compared to the same period last year. The state also holds the third position for the number of unemployment claims per 100,000 people in the labor force, highlighting the widespread impact of joblessness across the state.
