Stamford, CT – The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) announced plans to start the demolition of the damaged bridge in Norwalk on May 3, focusing on the morning hours.
The closure of I-95 is expected to last four days with the goal of reopening on Monday, May 6. This situation will inevitably cause significant traffic disruptions in Stamford, prompting officials to suggest avoiding unnecessary travel and seeking alternative transportation like Metro North trains.
A major accident early Thursday morning on Interstate 95 in southwest Connecticut has led to an extended closure of the highway in both directions. Governor Ned Lamont confirmed that a collision involving a tractor-trailer and another vehicle at 5:30 AM caused a gas tanker to explode, severely damaging an overpass.
Despite the dramatic incident, Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling reported that there were no serious injuries or fatalities. The highway is expected to remain closed for several days as authorities manage the aftermath and conduct safety inspections on the affected infrastructure.
