  • Capital Beltway scare as man allegedly brandishes loaded gun in traffic

COLLEGE PARK, MD – A Prince George’s County man was arrested Tuesday following a reported road rage incident involving a gun on the Capital Beltway.

Stephen Eric Scroggins, 52, of Temple Hills, allegedly pointed a firearm at another driver during a confrontation on I-495.

He was arrested without incident after police located him and recovered a loaded weapon from his vehicle.

The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. on August 13 when a driver contacted Maryland State Police to report a white Nissan Titan whose driver had allegedly brandished a gun while traveling near Annapolis Road on the inner loop of I-495. Troopers from the College Park Barrack and members of the Highway Gun Crimes Initiative launched an investigation and identified Scroggins as the suspect.

After securing a search warrant, state troopers located the Nissan Titan, initiated a traffic stop, and discovered a loaded firearm inside the vehicle. Scroggins was taken into custody and transported to the Prince George’s County Division of Corrections. He was charged with first- and second-degree assault, as well as use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was released the following day after posting a $2,500 bail.

Police say no injuries were reported in the incident. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and are reminding the public to report similar encounters immediately. This arrest is part of the state’s broader effort to reduce gun-related crimes on Maryland highways.

State Police are also continuing investigations into several other highway gun crimes, including the murders of Delonte Hicks, Charles Marks, and Nyah Hairston. Anyone with information is asked to call 410-538-1887. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

  • Harford County nurse wins $50K on MONOPOLY scratch-off after second-guessing ticket

Bel Air, MD — A registered nurse from Harford County turned a quiet moment into a major payday when she scratched off a $50,000 prize on a Monopoly X50 lottery ticket — but she didn’t believe it at first.

The Bel Air woman, who treats scratch-offs as a casual hobby, told Maryland Lottery officials she had to double-check the win after once thinking she’d won big, only to be let down. This time, however, it was real.

She scored the second-tier $50,000 prize on the $10 Monopoly X50 ticket, which launched in January and remains her go-to game. The lucky ticket was purchased at Margate Marathon on York Road in Lutherville.

“I always pick it if the store has it,” she told officials. “Monopoly tickets have been pretty lucky for me.”

This is the seventh $50,000 prize claimed in the game, leaving three more still in circulation, along with three unclaimed $100,000 top prizes.

The winner said she plans to pay down bills and treat herself with a portion of the windfall, though she hasn’t settled on exactly how just yet.

  • Waldorf teen charged as adult in shooting during gun sale

Waldorf, MD – A 17-year-old has been charged as an adult after a July shooting in Waldorf left a man wounded in the leg, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies were alerted on July 5 when a 22-year-old victim arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound. The man initially told investigators he had met someone on Sharpersville Road to purchase AirPods. Authorities later determined the meeting was for the victim to sell a firearm to the suspect.

During the transaction, the teen allegedly took the gun and shot the man in the leg. The injury was not life-threatening, and the victim is expected to recover.

An arrest warrant was issued, and deputies searched the suspect’s home on August 6, recovering evidence connected to the case. The teen was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, and weapons violations.

  • Silver Spring woman strikes $100K win after lucky number 13 leads her to top lottery prize

SILVER SPRING, MD – A retired educator who has been playing the Maryland Lottery since its earliest days just landed a $100,000 jackpot after trusting her instincts and choosing a scratch-off ticket sitting in the 13th spot at a Rockville convenience store.

The Montgomery County woman, who claimed the prize on Thursday at Lottery headquarters, purchased two $10 “Double Your Money” tickets from Food Stop Mini on Boiling Brook Parkway.

She said it wasn’t the ticket design that caught her attention, but its position in the display — 13 — a number she’s always felt drawn to.

After scratching off the tickets in her car, she revealed a “2X” symbol next to a $50,000 prize, which doubled to $100,000.

Stunned by the result, she returned to the store to scan the ticket and confirm the six-figure win.

The retired educator, who spent over two decades in the school system, held onto the ticket for nearly three weeks before claiming her prize, saying she plans to use the money to support her family but has no immediate spending plans for herself.

The winning scratch-off was one of the first top prizes awarded on the relatively new Double Your Money ticket, which launched in July and still has 13 top-tier $100,000 prizes unclaimed.

The ticket also offers two remaining second-tier prizes worth $50,000 each, along with tens of thousands of smaller cash awards.

Food Stop Mini, the store that sold the winning ticket, received a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery, equal to 1% of the prize amount.
