SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — The Suffolk County Police Department joins the broader Long Island community in mourning the loss of Nassau County Police Department’s Chief of Patrol, Kevin G. Canavan, who passed away due to complications from 9/11-related cancer. His brave contributions during the rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero ultimately led to his illness.
Chief Canavan’s distinguished 39-year career with the Nassau County Police Department began on May 31, 1985. He climbed the ranks from a recruit to the second-highest ranking uniformed officer, overseeing more than 2,000 members.
