Cumberland Police Department Arrests Two for Theft on Virginia Avenue

CUMBERLAND, Md. — The Cumberland Police Department made two separate arrests on Monday, August 26, 2024, in connection with thefts from businesses located in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue.

First Incident:
At approximately 8:46 a.m., officers responded to a theft complaint at a local business. Upon arrival, staff reported that Michael Anthony Lazas, 57, of Cumberland, had stolen property from the store. After conducting an investigation, Lazas was issued a criminal citation for theft of less than $100 and released pending trial.

Second Incident:
Later that day, at around 12:27 p.m., officers were called to another theft at a business in the same block of Virginia Avenue. Officers located the suspect, David Joe Swanger, 66, of Cumberland, on Virginia Avenue. After confirming with staff that Swanger had stolen property, he was also issued a criminal citation for theft of less than $100 and released pending trial.

Both individuals will face their charges in court at a later date. The Cumberland Police Department continues to encourage residents to report any suspicious activity to help maintain public safety.
