ANNAPOLIS, MD- In response to recent incidents of school violence in Georgia and Harford County, Maryland, the Anne Arundel County Police Department and Anne Arundel County Public Schools have been investigating numerous reports of threats against local schools. These threats have been deemed unfounded, reflecting a broader regional and national trend.
The Police Department reported that over the past 36 hours, 42 school threat tips were submitted statewide. These tips, spanning various counties and schools, were mainly shared on social media platforms, frequently accompanied by screenshots. Efforts are ongoing to identify the origins of these threats.
In the past 24 hours, the department’s Homeland Security Section has received 14 additional school violence threat tips. These prompted immediate responses from patrol officers. The Homeland Security & Intelligence Unit investigated 13 incidents last week and is on track to surpass that number this week.
As many of these threats originate from misinformation or false narratives on social media, their spread can cause fear and disruptions in schools. The Police Department urges the public to refrain from forwarding or sharing online threats, directing such information only to police or school officials.
