Trenton, NJ – The Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee has moved forward with legislation introduced by Senators M. Teresa Ruiz, Shirley K. Turner, and Angela V. McKnight. The proposed bill requires the Commissioner of Education to create and maintain a central application and web portal for certified teachers and substitutes seeking jobs in New Jersey public schools.

The initiative aims to connect educators and substitutes with job openings in public schools. A centralized application system seeks to reduce redundancy and simplify the process for both applicants and school districts. Senator Ruiz emphasized the importance of making the application process more accessible as the state continues to face teacher shortages.

Senator Turner noted the current burden on individual districts to meet staffing needs with limited state assistance. The proposed portal would, she argued, make it simpler for districts to find and retain qualified staff while maintaining educational quality. Turner described the single application system as a way to lessen the administrative load on districts.

Currently, public school districts post job listings through their websites or third-party services like njschooljobs.com. These listings spread across different educational institutions, though access can be limited to those with the necessary resources.
