Missouri parents charged after home circumcision on infant son leads to hospitalization

MORGAN COUNTY, Mo. — A Missouri couple is facing charges after allegedly performing a circumcision on their infant son at home, a procedure that led to significant medical complications and hospitalization, according to authorities.

Tyler Wade Gibson, 35, and Bailey Alexus Gibson, 32, brought their son to University Hospital in Columbia on November 27 after performing the operation, prompting staff to notify the Department of Social Services hotline, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The parents initially took the boy to Lake Regional Hospital before he was transferred to University Hospital. Despite doctors’ concerns, they reportedly left the hospital with the child against medical advice, officials said.

During an interview with Morgan County Sheriff’s deputies, Tyler Gibson admitted to performing the circumcision without any medical training. He told detectives he had conducted online research and said a “blessing” before proceeding with the procedure, which he described as being more complicated than anticipated.

“The procedure did not go as planned,” investigators wrote in the affidavit, noting that Gibson used a sanitized blade and gauze pads but “wasn’t prepared for the amount of bleeding,” which ultimately forced the couple to seek medical help.

Authorities have not disclosed the child’s current condition or the specific charges the parents are facing, but the case has raised serious concerns about the safety and legality of the act.

The incident highlights the grave risks of attempting medical procedures without professional training or proper facilities.
