First-time Maryland Lottery player wins $100,000 on scratch-off ticket

WALDORF, Md. — A Charles County woman who had never purchased a lottery ticket before struck gold last week, winning $100,000 on her very first try with a Mega Bucks scratch-off game, Maryland Lottery officials announced.

The Southern Maryland resident bought the ticket Friday afternoon at US Fuel on Crain Highway while paying for gas with cash. Using change from her purchase, she selected a $10 Mega Bucks ticket, a game that debuted just weeks earlier in late November.

That evening, as she scratched off the ticket, she noticed what appeared to be a match. Initially skeptical, she called a family member to confirm her reading of the game rules. “I was shocked. My palms started sweating. I just could not believe it,” she told Lottery officials.

The $100,000 prize marks the first top prize claimed in the new Mega Bucks game, which still has eight more $100,000 prizes and nine $50,000 second-tier prizes awaiting discovery, according to the Lottery. US Fuel will also receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

“All of my life, people have told me that I’m unlucky. This proves them all wrong,” the winner said.
