BROOKLYN, NY — A Brooklyn man who evaded authorities for over seven years was arraigned Friday on murder charges in the fatal 2017 shooting of 20-year-old Justin Hackley, a college student home for summer break.
Dean Boland, 35, was arrested in Albany by U.S. Marshals and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced. Boland was ordered held without bail and is scheduled to return to court on February 3.
Boland and his brother, Rasheed Boland, 32, were indicted in 2017 for allegedly killing Hackley during a confrontation on Ocean Avenue near Church Avenue. Rasheed Boland was arrested in Texas in 2019 after living under an assumed name.
According to investigators, the incident began when Rasheed Boland harassed a woman, leading to a fight with her boyfriend. After the altercation, Rasheed allegedly retrieved his brother, and both returned armed to confront the group. Hackley was shot twice while trying to stop the assault on his friend.
Hackley was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital Center. Surveillance footage and DNA evidence linked the Boland brothers to the crime.
