Newark Man Arrested for Firing Gun During Pub Altercation

by Breaking Local News Report

NEWARK, DE — Delaware State Police have arrested a Newark man on multiple charges after he allegedly fired a gun during an altercation outside McLaren’s Irish Pub early Wednesday morning.

Authorities responded to the pub on Churchmans Road around 1:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a man with a firearm. Investigators determined that 35-year-old Durell Johns approached a woman in the parking lot, forcibly grabbed her, and made threatening remarks.

During the confrontation, Johns retrieved a firearm from his black Hyundai Sonata and fired a single round at the woman’s cell phone, which was on the ground several feet away from her. He then fled the scene.

Troopers quickly located Johns’ vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, taking him into custody without incident.

Johns was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, first-degree reckless endangering, aggravated menacing, malicious interference with emergency communications, and offensive touching. He was arraigned and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $31,500 secured bond.

The Delaware State Police Criminal Investigative Unit is continuing the investigation.
