Shooting Incident at Crozet’s Harris Teeter Ends with Three Fatalities

Crozet, VA -Albemarle County Police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place on Monday at the Harris Teeter in Crozet. The incident resulted in the deaths of two victims, Peter L. Martin, 43, and Diane G. Spangler, 68, as well as the shooter, Justin M. Barbour, 28.

The incident began at approximately 1:35 p.m. when emergency services responded to reports of gunfire. First responders found Martin deceased at the scene while Spangler was in critical condition and later died after being taken to UVA Medical Center. Barbour was engaged by an off-duty federal officer who intervened and shot Barbour, leading to his death.

Authorities have determined that Barbour had no previous connections to either victim or the Harris Teeter location. Before the incident, Barbour was tracked leaving his residence at around 1:22 p.m., traveling to Crozet and arriving in the Harris Teeter parking lot by 1:33 p.m. He proceeded to fire 28 rounds within 20 seconds.

Barbour had no criminal history, though he had previous encounters with law enforcement unrelated
