Truck crashes through Wildwood boardwalk, police release video

NORTH WILDWOOD, NJ — A delivery truck crashed through the wooden boards of the North Wildwood boardwalk Monday evening, prompting a swift response from police and the release of surveillance footage showing the moment the vehicle broke through.

The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. near East 23rd Avenue, when a truck scheduled to pick up a carnival game was maneuvering on the boardwalk. As the truck backed up, part of the structure gave way beneath the rear wheels, causing the back of the vehicle to sink into the collapsed section.

In the video, released Tuesday by North Wildwood Police, the truck is seen halting abruptly before the driver exits the cab and inspects the damage. No injuries were reported.

Authorities confirmed that the truck had received a permit to access the boardwalk. However, investigators determined that the vehicle exceeded the weight the wooden structure was designed to support.

Key points

  • A truck crashed through the North Wildwood boardwalk Monday evening.
  • The vehicle had a permit but was heavier than the boardwalk’s structural limits.
  • Surveillance video shows the moment of the collapse and the driver exiting safely.

No injuries reported as review of boardwalk use begins

The city is now reviewing boardwalk access policies following the incident. Officials did not specify the weight of the truck or the exact load limit for that section of the boardwalk, but noted that structural assessments are underway.

Public works crews responded shortly after the collapse to remove the vehicle and inspect the affected area. Temporary barriers have been placed around the damaged section to prevent pedestrian access.

The boardwalk remains open to the public, though portions near the collapse site may be restricted until repairs are completed. City officials have not provided a timeline for the full restoration.
