ELKTON, Md. – A 63-year-old man died Monday after a motorcycle crash involving a van at a Cecil County intersection, Maryland State Police confirmed.
The crash occurred around 2:40 p.m. at the intersection of Blue Ball Road and Dogwood Road in Elkton. According to a preliminary investigation, the Chrysler van was heading west on Dogwood Road when it struck a Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling north on Blue Ball Road.
The motorcycle’s operator, identified as Velmer Huff Jr. of Elk Mills, was taken to Christiana Hospital in Delaware, where he was later pronounced dead. A passenger on the motorcycle, Tara Hammond, 43, of North East, was also hospitalized with injuries.
The van was driven by Ethel Smith, 73, who was not reported injured. No charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether speed, impairment, or other factors played a role in the crash.
Police investigating cause of collision
State police from the North East Barrack responded to the scene and closed a portion of the roadway for several hours to allow for cleanup and preliminary investigation. Witness statements and surveillance footage, if available, will be reviewed as part of the inquiry.
“The rider of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” Maryland State Police said in a news release.
Investigators have not indicated whether additional updates will be provided or if further interviews will be conducted.
