BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A Mexican Navy training vessel, the Cuauhtémoc, struck the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge during a sailing maneuver Saturday evening, injuring at least 19 people, including four seriously, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. as the tall ship, part of a training cruise, attempted to pass beneath the bridge. The collision caused structural damage to the vessel and forced the immediate suspension of its scheduled voyage.

Naval and local emergency authorities responded quickly to assess the condition of the ship, its equipment, and the personnel on board. The injured were treated on scene and transported to area hospitals.

The Mexican Navy stated it is reviewing the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to personnel safety, transparency in its operations, and continued training of its future officers.

The Cuauhtémoc, a sail-powered training ship used to prepare cadets of the Mexican Navy, will remain docked while the investigation and damage assessments continue.
