ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Henry, a beloved member of the Allegheny County Police Department’s Mounted Unit, is retiring after nearly 18 years of service, officials announced.

Henry joined the unit in 2007 and became a familiar presence at South Park. In 2011, he was diagnosed with a form of skin cancer that threatened to end his career. Thanks to an experimental procedure performed by a local veterinarian, his eye was saved and the cancer has remained in remission ever since.

The department will hold a sendoff for Henry on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the ACPD stables on Corrigan Drive. He will then move to Round Hill Park to live out his retirement alongside other retired horses.

“Thank you, Henry!” the department wrote in a tribute on social media.
