HAGERSTOWN, Md. — A retired landscaper from Sharpsburg won a $50,000 top prize on a Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket after a banner outside a local liquor store caught his eye.

The winner, who identified himself as “Shady Grady,” purchased the $50,000 Cash scratch-off at Hub City Liquors in Hagerstown. He visited Maryland Lottery headquarters on May 15 to claim his prize.

“I would have gone right by the store,” he told lottery officials. “But, that sign caught my attention,” referring to a banner celebrating previous winners.

The $50,000 Cash game launched in December 2022 and initially offered 160 top prizes. This marks the 96th top-prize win in the game’s history.

After scratching the ticket, Grady said he handed it to his wife to confirm what he was seeing. “It was joy, of course, but also nerves. And lots and lots of laughter,” he recalled. The family plans to save and invest the winnings.

Hub City Liquors, located at 1063 Maryland Avenue, will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket. The store has a history of big winners, including a $2 million prize in 2023.
