No toll Friday coming to this major New Jersey expressway this weekend

HAMMONTON, N.J. — Travelers heading east on the Atlantic City Expressway this Memorial Day Weekend can pass through the Egg Harbor Toll Plaza free of charge during Friday rush hour, thanks to Chickie’s and Pete’s and the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

From 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, the popular Philadelphia-based restaurant chain will cover all tolls for vehicles driving eastbound through the Egg Harbor exit, marking the return of “Free Toll Friday.” The toll giveaway is part of the broader “100 Days of Summer” celebration held at the Frank S. Farley Plaza.

Earlier in the day, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Farley Plaza will host a family-friendly summer kickoff event, with complimentary Crabfries® from the Chickie’s and Pete’s food truck, live radio broadcasts, a car show, and dozens of participating vendors and community organizations.

“Free Toll Friday is one of my favorite summertime traditions,” said Pete Ciarrocchi, chairman and CEO of Chickie’s and Pete’s. “We’re excited to be back at Farley’s Plaza hosting one of our favorite annual events this year.”

Among the attractions, visitors will find the New Jersey State Police K9 team, Atlantic City International Airport fire and rescue vehicles, and a petting zoo hosted by the Funny Farm animal sanctuary.

Local businesses and charities participate in expanded kickoff

The event also includes participation from local vendors, artists, and nonprofit groups. Organizations such as The Patriot Fund, which supports veterans returning to civilian life, will be on hand. Proceeds from Chickie’s “Patriot Punch” cocktail will benefit the fund throughout the weekend.

Ciarrocchi said the toll giveaway is also a tribute to his family’s military background. “My Dad and my Uncles were all in the military,” he said. “My Uncle George…won the Silver Star for bravery. He was quite the guy, and I couldn’t think of a better way to honor him.”

The plaza celebration includes samples from local food vendors such as Joe Tea, Jersey Girl Chocolates, and My Big Fat Cookies. Ron’s Gardens will offer fresh produce and garden plants, catering to shore-bound travelers stocking up for vacation stays.

Classic car owners are invited to display their vehicles in the designated Cruise Lot area. Visitors can also view the plaza’s 9/11 memorial and a 22-foot brass replica of the Battleship New Jersey.

Young attendees can participate in chalk art activities and meet animals from the Funny Farm. The South Jersey Transportation Authority will also highlight its environmental programs under its READI initiative.

Chickie’s and Pete’s “Free Toll Friday” and summer kickoff event at Farley Plaza are expected to draw thousands of holiday travelers.
