WASHINGTON, D.C. — A shooting in Northeast D.C. Tuesday afternoon left one person injured near Spingarn High School, where a championship track meet was underway, according to police and school officials.
Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 800 block of 26th Street NE around 3:00 p.m. on May 20 after reports of gunfire in the area. Investigators said one victim was located suffering from gunshot wounds. The person’s condition has not been released.
The incident occurred just steps away from Spingarn High School’s athletic facilities, where students, staff, and families had gathered for the DCIAA elementary track championship. A residence and vehicle were also reportedly struck during the gunfire.
DC Public Schools confirmed that all students and staff at the event were safe and accounted for following the shooting. Officials said arrangements were made to return students to their schools safely.
