OCEAN CITY, N.J. — Ocean City High School sophomore Gillian Acocella has earned first place in the 2025 Congressional Art Competition for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District with her charcoal portrait of Marilyn Monroe.
The national competition, which highlights the talents of high school artists from across the country, will feature Acocella’s winning piece in the Cannon tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one year. The 16-year-old artist will also attend a reception and award ceremony in Washington, D.C.

“I am extremely grateful and proud of myself,” Acocella said. “I chose to draw Marilyn Monroe because of her significance to women around the world and the iconic public figure she is.”
Acocella was encouraged to enter the competition by her art teacher during her freshman year. She submitted a non-copyrighted charcoal drawing of Monroe, which was selected among other district entries by a panel of judges.
Recognition from district and school officials
Ocean City High School Principal Dr. Wendy O’Neal praised Acocella’s selection, stating, “This honor not only reflects her individual brilliance but also highlights the strength of the arts education in our community.”
Superintendent Dr. Christian Angelillo added, “We are so proud of Gillian receiving this well-deserved honor. Her pieces are truly impressive, and her dedication to art is inspiring.”
Acocella, who also plays in the OCHS wind ensemble, said she prefers working with charcoal because of its smooth texture but is expanding into colored pencils and paint. She plans to pursue art beyond high school and attend the Savannah College of Art and Design.
