Charles County Player Finds $50K Surprise on App

LA PLATA, Md. — A Charles County woman was shocked to discover a $50,000 Powerball prize while checking her ticket on the Maryland Lottery app at 2:30 a.m., officials confirmed Monday.

The retired government employee purchased the winning Quick Pick ticket for the June 25 drawing at Lady’s Liquors, located at 6474 Crain Highway in La Plata. She realized her good fortune after scanning the ticket and quickly shared the news with her husband and sons.

While claiming her prize on June 27 at Lottery headquarters, she said she planned to put the winnings toward home improvements.

Lady’s Liquors has a history of big winners, including selling a share of a $414 million Mega Millions jackpot in 2014.

Powerball win adds to shop’s lucky streak

The woman, who usually plays multiple games, chose to try her luck with a single Powerball ticket that day.

Lottery officials reminded players to sign the back of their tickets immediately and review prize claim rules on the official website.

No further details about the winner were released.
