NEWPORT NEWS, VA — A man has been charged in connection with the March 29 death of a Newport News woman, police announced Thursday.
Officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Marshall Avenue at 3:34 p.m. that day for a report of a deceased person. Responding units found 41-year-old Jerrice Wilkerson inside a residence. She was pronounced dead at 3:43 p.m. by medics.
After an investigation, authorities charged Oris Jerome Askew on July 3 with first-degree murder and two counts of assault in the commission of a felony related to Wilkerson’s death. Police confirmed Askew was already in custody on unrelated charges.
“While this arrest cannot bring back Ms. Wilkerson, it stands as a clear demonstration of the dedication and hard work of our investigative team,” said Chief of Police Steve Drew.
Details on the motive or circumstances of the homicide were not released.
The case remains under active investigation by the Newport News Police Department.
