BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Bad news for tourists and fishermen alike. Island Beach State Park has gone into a limited access mode because of two ongoing problems and the beaches aren’t expected to return to normal until August. Access to the Barnegat Inlet has also bee suspended through the end of the summer officials say.
“The park has experienced sewer line blockages over the past several days, requiring the closure of restrooms while Island Beach State Park staff and outside contractors work to identify and resolve the issue. Per the New Jersey Department of Health’s Public Recreational Bathing Code, operational restrooms are required to safely allow public access. Without operational restrooms, it would be both unsanitary and unsafe to allow visitors into the park,” the park announced.
Island Beach State Park has reopened at limited capacity following several days of sewer line issues that forced the closure of restrooms and restricted public access, park officials announced.
According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, partial reopening was allowed after staff and contractors restored limited restroom functionality. Additional portable toilets are being brought in to accommodate visitors; however, an early closure may be necessary if system-wide issues persist.
Under state health code regulations, operational restrooms are required for safe public access. Outdoor shower towers at Swimming Area 1 are currently closed for repairs.
Two Mobile Sport Fishing Vehicle access points also remain closed to protect nesting Piping Plovers, a federally threatened and state-endangered species. Access from the Gillikins Access Point to the Northern Natural Area has been closed since June 21 and may remain off-limits until mid-August
A separate closure from 0.5 miles south of the A-23 access point to the jetty may remain in place through late August.
Permit holders are advised that due to these closures, the park may reach its vehicle capacity earlier than usual.
