NEWARK, N.J. — Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying a woman caught on surveillance video who allegedly stole a cellphone during a meetup arranged through Facebook Marketplace, officials announced Monday.
According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., the theft occurred on July 7 around 9 p.m. on South 9th Street near Central Avenue. The victim had agreed to meet the suspect at that location to sell a phone.
During the exchange, the victim allowed the woman to inspect the phone. She then ran eastbound on Central Avenue with the device, fleeing the scene without paying.

The suspect is described as having a light complexion and small dreadlocks. She was last seen wearing a blue “True Religion” hoodie with white lettering on the back, black sweatpants, and black-and-white Jordan sneakers.
Surveillance footage captured the suspect in the area. Anyone with information about her identity is asked to call the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Tips may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward.
