D.C. curfew plan sees smooth start, no disturbances in Navy Yard

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The first weekend of the newly enforced Juvenile Curfew Zone in the Navy Yard area concluded without any arrests, disturbances, or reported juvenile incidents, the Metropolitan Police Department announced Monday.

The curfew zone, which was active from 8:00 p.m. to midnight on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, focused on engaging young people in public spaces and encouraging compliance without enforcement. Officers from the First District reported gaining full voluntary cooperation from youth present in the area during curfew hours.

Citywide juvenile curfew hours, which begin nightly at 11:00 p.m., remain in effect across all neighborhoods. Two curfew violations were reported outside of the Navy Yard zone over the weekend—one shortly after 11:00 p.m. Friday in Navy Yard, and another around 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1200 block of U Street NW. No arrests were made in either case.

“Our goal in establishing Juvenile Curfew Zones is never to make arrests or detain youth for curfew violations,” said Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith in a statement. “Our members work to engage youth and gain compliance, which is exactly what we observed this weekend.”

The department confirmed that it will continue to use curfew zones as needed throughout the summer. The citywide juvenile curfew remains in effect for all individuals 17 and under from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. nightly through August 31, 2025.
