Virginia Beach man charged with murder in fatal New Colony Drive shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A 19-year-old Virginia Beach man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred late Friday night on New Colony Drive, police announced.

Virginia Beach Police officers responded to the 5500 block of New Colony Drive around 9:57 p.m. on July 18 after receiving reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found 20-year-old Jamele Newby-Gibson suffering from a gunshot wound in the roadway. Officers provided life-saving measures before he was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Following an investigation by the VBPD Homicide Unit, detectives identified Nashaun Reid, 19, of Virginia Beach, as the suspect. He was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

“To be able to remove a dangerous individual from our community and bring closure to a grieving family in such a short period speaks volumes to their dedication and professionalism,” said Chief Paul Neudigate.

Police say the arrest was made within six hours of the initial 911 call.
